Area description


A 10 minute drive along the coast road will bring you to the holiday village of Portsalon where you will find a wonderful blue flag beach and a top class golf course. Portsalon Golf Club has been extensively redesigned in the last few years and is now one of the finest links courses in Donegal. At the village harbour there is a water sports centre where kayaks, pedal boats, wetsuits and boogie boards can be hired.

Glenvar itself is centrally located on the Fanad Peninsula. This beautiful peninsula stretches north from the village of Milford to Fanad Head and back down to the heritage village of Ramelton. It contains numerous bays, glorious beaches, rugged mountains, rolling hills and numerous small lakes.

This is our fourth visit to Aghadreena Cottage and we love it. The cottage is a wonderful home from home, the views and scenery are fantastic, the beaches magnificent ad there is so much to do and see a week is never long enough. We managed to enjoy several meals sitting in the glorious garden, even although the weather was not great…. but who comes to Donegal for the weather? Not us!!!! We hope to come back soon.

Aghadreena is a truly unique, tastefully restored, traditional Irish cottage with spectacular views over Lough Swilly, County Donegal, Ireland. This charming cottage is just oozing with character and displays a superb view of the Coastal Inlet of Lough Swilly and Inishowen. Many of the old style lineaments have been retained and they combine wonderfully with modern conveniences. Pine furnishings throughout and the open fire, thick walls, small windows and low doors make it all so cosy. The area boasts superb scenery and fabulous beaches, hill walking, fresh water fishing and sea angling. Pony trekking is also a popular activity whilst there are many golf courses in the region.

If holiday is cancelled 6 weeks prior to arrival, we will endeavour to return the deposit if we are able to re let the property at the normal rate less €20 for administration.

Cancellations made 15-28 days before start date of holiday - 75% of total holiday cost
Cancellations made 1-14 days before start date of holiday - full holiday costs
