Armoy is a small
picturesque village in County Antrim located 9 km south west of
Ballycastle and 13 km north east of Ballymoney. It is situated on
the banks of the River Bush. The village lies between two of the
nine Glens of Antrim, Glenshesk and Glentaisie. The Armoy area also
takes in half of Knocklayd mountain.
Armoy is one of the largest villages in the Moyle area providing
primary education, convenience shopping, and Post Office, as well as
a range of community facilities. A picturesque Presbyterian Church
sits on the edge of the village. The church’s striking spire, with a
Viking ship weathervane on top, has been described as ’a miniature
replica of the Eiffel Tower’. There are the remains of an ancient
round tower on the edge of the village. The village centrepiece was
always a building beside the river known locally as 'Tilly
Molloy's'. This building has been been completely refurbished in the
last decade and now contains shops, a cafe and spacious holiday
apartments overlooking the River Bush - an ideal place for fishing,
walking or just relaxing
Joey Dunlop OBE was a resident of Armoy and was a member of The
Armoy Armada. He was a world champion motorcyclist. |
