Ballymena is a town
in County Antrim and is the seat of Ballymena Borough Council. Over
half of the Borough’s total population of 58,500 live in Ballymena.
The Borough,
with the town of Ballymena as its centre, covers 200 square miles of
one of the loveliest parts of Antrim. Ballymena Town is built on
land given to the Adair family by King Charles I in 1626, on the
basis that the town hold two annual fairs and a free Saturday market
in perpetuity. The Saturday market still runs. The town used to host
Ireland’s largest one-day agricultural show at the Ballymena
Showgrounds. There are still many historic buildings in the town.
The Town Hall was built in 1924 on the site of the old Market House
and has just recently been refurbished in 2007 at a cost of approx
£20 million
Ballymena Town itself is the regional administrative centre for many
organisations in the North - Eastern part of Northern Ireland,
including the Health and Social Service
Board, Education and Library Boards and Government Departments such
as Inland Revenue and Social Security. It is also a popular retail
area with a mixture of High Street Stores and traditional locally
run outlets. Farming and agricultural food related industries also
play a major role in the economy of the Borough. Ballymena also has
a strong manufacturing industry base. It has a central location
within Northern Ireland with good roads and rail communication
networks. The International Airport is only 18 miles away and the
Belfast City Airport is 30 miles away.
