Carnlough village is
beautifully situated on the famous Antrim Coast Road 14 miles north
of Larne.. It boasts a magnificent backdrop - Glencloy - the second
of the Nine Glens of Antrim - the 'Glen of the hedges'. The
picturesque village harbour has for many years been Carnlough’s main
focal point and is a key tourist attraction The harbour was built by
the Marchioness of Londonderry around 1850. Limestone continued to
be exported from there until 1945 when the Glencloy quarries closed
down. The Eglinton Lime Company of Glenarm used the harbour for
several years until the late fifties when silting became a problem.
The harbour has undergone extensive refurbishment in recent times
under the Larne Borough Council and is now used by yachts and
pleasure boats.
There are lots of walks and sites to be sampled around the area,
including the famous Cranny Water Falls, a beauty spot that is not
to be missed by nature enthusiasts. Hill walkers and ramblers will
find a wealth of opportunity for scenic walks in the hinterland of
Carnlough. The Antrim Plateau boasts a string of attractive lakes
nestling on its heights. Loughascraban, Loughisland, Loughfad,
Loughfine, Loughnabrick, Loughnatrosk, Cranny Lough, Loughnatullig
and Loughnacally are bordered by the Ulster Way as it leads to
Glenariff. The area around the modern village is scattered with
numerous sites of archeological significance and bears testimony to
the ancient history of the village and its people. Early visitors to
the area included the Vikings and the Normans. |
