Carrickfergus is an
historic town with a beautiful coastal location, a thriving economic
hub, and access to wonderful countryside. It is Co. Antrim's oldest
town and takes its name from Fergus Mór mac Eirc, the 6th century
king of Dál Riata.
Carrickfergus stands on the north shore of Belfast Lough and is home
to the 12th century Carrickfergus Castle, one of the best-preserved
Norman castles in Ireland. It was built around 1180 by John de
Courcy. Today the castle is open to the public for fun days out, or
to those wishing to learn more about its history. Carrickfergus also
has a strong ecclesiastical heritage. St. Nicholas’s Church was
established on its present site in 1182 and its architecture and
contents reflect 900 years of social history.
In the summer months walking tours of Carrickfergus and its environs
are available, taking in the walls and other high points of the
town. Carrickfergus has more than enough facilities to keep the
visitor active - including top class golf, angling and sailing. And
wherever you go, you’ll be bowled over by the beautiful scenery and
spectacular coastline of this part of Co. Antrim. |
