The village of
Glenarm lies on the North Channel coast about 12 miles north of
Larne. Dating back to Norman times, the village is the family seat
of the MacDonnells, who once occupied Dunluce Castle on the north
coast.
The village is now a Conservation Area, and its main street (Altmore
Street) leads directly to Glenarm Forest, from which can be seen
Glenarm Castle, on the far bank of the little river which runs
through the village to the sea. The imposing entrance to Glenarm
Castle, the Barbican Gate, is at the heart of the village. The
Castle dates from 1750, with early 19th century alterations. Glenarm
claims to be the oldest town in Ulster having been granted a charter
in the 12th century.
The Church of Ireland stands on the site of a Third Order Franciscan
Friary founded about AD 1500 with part of the walls still visible.
The great Shane O'Neill, killed at Cushendun in 1567 is reputed to
be buried here, minus his head which was displayed on a spike at
Dublin Castle.
The local harbour has recently been renovated and a new marina
created with moorings for some 75 boats.From Glenarm you can easily
sail to anywhere - the islands of Islay, Jura and Mull and the West
Coast of Scotland are only a days sailing away. It is approximately
5 hours to Campbeltown, from where you can visit many areas within
the Clyde like the Isle of Arran. |
