Islandmagee is a
peninsula on the east coast of County Antrim, located between the
towns of Larne and Carrickfergus. The Peninsula is ideal for sea
fishing, golfing, diving, horse riding and bird watching. The
'Island', as the locals call it, is 8 miles long and is joined to
the mainland by an attractive raised causeway .
On the eastern side of the island rugged basalt cliffs look towards
Scotland while more gentle gradients on the western side face the
sheltered waters of Larne Lough. Several fine sandy beaches are
located between the northern promontories of the Island.
Scattered farms and quiet lanes fringed by hedgerows divide the
green fields. The area is famous for its sense of old world charm
and, as you travel around the peninsula, you may be forgiven for
thinking that time itself seems to have passed Islandmagee by.
Although not quite an island, the area enjoyed a reputation as a
self reliant community, This sense of history is treasured and
guarded by the local communities who are proud of their seafaring
and farming traditions.
The friendliness of its inhabitants along with a high standard of
accommodation and natural attractions, makes Islandmagee an ideal
destination for a holiday , short break or simply a day trip to
explore the splendours of 'The Island'. Settlements on the peninsula
include Ballystrudder, Portmuck, Mill Bay and Ballykeel, while
Brown's Bay is a popular tourist attraction. |
