Capital of the
enchanting Lagan Valley, Lisburn is a buzzing and confident city.
The 14th March 2002 was an historic occasion for Lisburn as this was
the day the Borough was awarded City Status.
From firm foundations of invention and a world-renowned linen
industry, Lisburn has developed a unique spirit of enterprise that
has stimulated major investment from both home grown and
international business.
The new multi-functional Lagan Valley Island, on the banks of the
River Lagan, identifies Lisburn as a leading centre for the arts.
The impressive Lagan Valley LeisurePlex has also established itself
as a mecca for the sporting enthusiast, complete with Northern
Ireland's largest leisure pool, boasting the fastest water ride in
all of Ireland.
Shopping facilities are extensive. Lisburn is home to all major high
street names while retaining the character of local independent
traders. The city has seen some of the largest retail developments
locate in the city in recent years including the opening of the
award-winning Lisburn Square, the expansion of Bow Street Mall and
the development of Sprucefield, making it the perfect location for
shoppers from across Ireland.
By travelling only a few miles outside the city centre visitors can
enjoy the rich heritage and individual characteristics of nearby
towns and villages, learn about the historical significance of
Hillsborough Castle, enjoy the spectacular floral showpieces on
display in Moira during the summer months or head south towards the
Mountains of Mourne and the rolling hills of the Dromara
countryside. |
