The village of
Portglenone stands on both banks of the River Bann with the largest
portion of residents living on the Antrim side of the river
Always a place of importance because of its bridge over the River
Bann, Portglenone was formerly known for its grass-seed market,
linen factories and important salmon fishery and now home to an
18-berth marina.
Portglenone Forest Park, just outside the village, is classified as
an ‘Ancient Woodland’, and has well marked nature trails, with the
River Bann flowing through the forest. There is also a memorial to
the United States servicemen stationed there during world war two.
The foundations of their Nissan huts can still be seen throughout
the wood.
The Gig 'n the Bann is a local cross-community Music and Dance
Festival which has been held every year since 2001. It takes its
name from the River Bann which flows through the village. The famous
Timothy Eaton who emigrated to Canada in the last century and
established the world famous Eaton Stores across Canada, worked in
Portglenone. |
