Portrush is a
wonderful seaside resort and one of the most popular ones in
Northern Ireland, which is no surprise when you see the funfair
rides, amusement parks, and indoor swimming attractions.
Barry's Amusements of Portrush are famous all over Ireland.
Established for over 50 years, Barry's is the largest amusement park
in Ireland with the latest rides for indoor and outdoor
entertainment. Kiddieland, which can be found next to Barry's,
offers smaller rides for young children. Waterworld is an indoor
holiday paradise with thrilling water flumes, water cannons, sprays
and jacuzzis while, if you wish to pamper yourself, the Health Suite
includes steam room, sauna and sunbeds for adults.
The main part of the old town, including the railway station as well
as most hotels, restaurants and bars, is built on a mile–long
peninsula, Ramore Head, pointing north-northwest. The town is well
known for its three sandy beaches, the West Strand, East Strand and
Whiterocks. Recently awarded with the prestigious 2009 Blue Flag
Award, Portrush Whiterocks Beach has become a favourite with locals
and a must see destination for International visitors.
Founded in 1888, the legendary Royal Portrush Golf Club has two
Championship Courses – the renowned Dunluce Course and the smaller
but equally enjoyable Valley Course. Both command impressive views
across the North Atlantic with breathtaking views of Scotland and
Donegal but the golf is even more spectacular. The Royal Portrush
Golf Club is the only golf club in Ireland which has hosted the Open
Championship (in 1951)
Dunluce Castle 3 miles east of Portrush - is sited dramatically
close to the edge of a headland, along the North Antrim coast.
Surrounded by jaw dropping coastal scenery, this medieval castle
stands where an early Irish fort was once built and where its
history can be traced back to early Christians and Vikings. Visit
and take a peek at medieval Irish life!
The North West 200 is a motorcycle race which runs through
Portstewart, Coleraine and Portrush every May, a long-running
tourist attraction which has attracted crowds in excess of 150,000
in past years. The late brothers Joey Dunlop and Robert Dunlop were
regular winners at the races: they hold the record for most wins,
with thirteen and fifteen respectively.
Portrush's biggest attraction, though, is undoubtedly its proximity
to the magnificent Causeway Coast and the Giant's Causeway. The
40,000 six-sided basalt columns are a geological wonder and an
absolute must-see on any visit to the area. |
