The village of
Bessbrook is situated in South Armagh about 5km west of Newry.
Bessbrook is a great example of a “model village”, purpose built for
mill workers. Bordered on three sides by quaint homes, the middle
square boasts a bowling green and children’s play area. Property has
been restored to allow the visitor a taste of what a home
environment might have looked like around the 1880s. At one time,
Bessbrook linen was among the finest in the world, and the linen
mill provided most of the employment in the village
On the outskirts of the village is John Mac Neill's Craigmore
Viaduct, known locally as the Eighteen Arches, built in 1851. The
viaduct still carries the Dublin/Belfast train link and with
eighteen, twenty metre high arches, spanning about half a kilometre,
it was for a long time the longest bridge in Ireland.
Derrymore House, a National Trust property open to the public, is
nearby. It is an 18th-century thatched house set in over 100 acres
of beautiful parkland and woodland. |
