Markethill is a
village in County Armagh located between Armagh City and Newry. A
livestock market is held here three times a week
The village of Markethill was founded by a Scottish family, the
Achesons of Gosford , Haddingtonshire (East Lothian), who received a
grant of 1,000 acres from King James I in 1610.
Gosford Castle is situated in Markethill. Construction of Gosford
castle began in 1819 and finished in the 1850s. It was commissioned
by Archibald Acheson, 2nd Earl of Gosford and the architect was
Thomas Hopper, one of the leading London architects of the first
half of the 19th century. The Ministry of Agriculture bought the
estate in 1958, establishing Gosford Forest Park. This park
comprises some 240 hectares of diverse woodland and open parkland
set in gentle rolling drumlin countryside. It was designated the
first conservation forest in Northern Ireland in 1986. It is open
every day of the year from 10.00 a.m. until sunset. Facilities
available include a camping and caravanning site, picnic and
barbecue areas, tea House and shop, way-marked trails, horse-riding
routes and orienteering routes. |
