Portadown is a town
situated on the River Bann, in the north of County Armagh. Although
the town can trace its origins to at least the 1600s, it was not
until the Victorian era and the arrival of the railway that it
became a major town. Portadown is known as "The Hub of the North",
the origin of this phrase coming from its central position in
Northern Ireland and being a major railway junction in the past,
where the Great Northern Railway's line diverged for Belfast,
Dublin, Armagh and Derry.
Portadown boasts of a thriving mix of shops, cafes, bars and
restaurants to tickle all taste buds. There are three modern
shopping centres – High Street Mall, Magowan West and the Meadows
which combine perfectly with the typical market town High Street
shops.
Within a radius of seven miles, the people of Portadown enjoy some
of the highest quality leisure and recreational facilities in
Northern Ireland. Virtually every indoor and outdoor sporting
activity is catered for. The natural assets of Lough Neagh and the
River Bann, and Portadown's location in the heart of the apple
blossom county of Armagh, provide an environment of beauty and rural
tranquillity to augment the thriving urban life of Portadown. |
