Bagenalstown is a
pretty town in County Carlow sited on a pleasant reach of the River
Barrow and derives its name from Walter Bagenal, who founded the
town in the 18th century. Also known as Muine Bheag the original
concept for the town was based on Versailles and the palaces of
Louis XIV, with fine streetscapes and classical buildings. The
impressive courthouse, modeled on the Parthenon in Athens, is all
that remains of Walter Bagenal’s dream today, but Bagenalstown
remains the ideal location for outdoor activities including angling,
inland cruising, cycling and walking tours
Visitors to Bagenalstown today can enjoy riverside walks, or take in
the historical aspect of the town from the 18th century courthouse
or perhaps visit the neo-classical railway station. Sports
facilities in Bagenalstown include cricket, hurling, soccer and
gaelic football together with tennis and pitch & putt. Picnic tables
and a picturesque lock and riverside walks all add to the visitor's
enjoyment. Leisure boats and barges also cruise on the Grand Canal
and the River Barrow. Bagenalstown also boast the only
wheelchair-friendly fishing stands on the River Barrow - a river
renowned for the quality of its angling.
Well worth a visit is Dunleckney Manor, 2.5km outside the town.
Dunleckney Manor was the former home of Walter Bagnel. Restored to
its former glory it is now open to the public.
