Clonegal is a
delightfull and well preserved village in the southeast of County
Carlow on the border with Countiy Wexford. It is in a rural setting,
5 km from Bunclody, County Wexford and 22 km from Carlow Town. The
village is built on the river Derry, two miles upstream from where
it meets the River Slaney. The river divides the Village in two
parts, Clonegal Village and the Watch House Village in County
Wexford.
Clonegal in one of the quaintest villages in the country and has
been nominated and awarded for various "Best Kept Village", "Tidy
Towns" and "Floral Pride" competitions. With a backdrop of tree clad
hills, this historic village is a joy to walk in, explore and
discover. Clonegal is famous for its historical sites, such
Huntington Castle, built 1625, and still inhabited by the direct
descendents, the Weavers Cottages built in the 1860s and the Wicklow
Way Park containing plaques in the memory of the Battle of Fiodh
Doreha.

Situated in a valley Clonegal in surrounded by the Blackstairs
Mountains to the South West and the Wicklow Mountains to the North
East. A very important village in the past and a hive of activity
boasting numerous tradesmen and craftsmen, it was only after the
building of the bride across the Slaney to Bunclody that Clonegal
became less of a commercial town and more the beautiful well know
picturesque village it is today. |
