Surrounded by
woodland and farmland Hacketstown is a small village in north-east
Carlow set in the foothills of the Wicklow Mountains . The River
Derreen flows westwards just north of the town and the River Derry
rises just south of the town. Eagle Hill, south of the town, has
delightful views from its summit and most of the county can be seen
spread out below.
Hacketstown was built up by the Normans towards the end of the 12th
century. Hacket was a common name amongst the Normans, this is where
is it believed that the name Hacketstown came from. The present
parish church was built in 1803. This is also the site where a
castle had been built in about 1300. Hacketstown was the scene of a
fierce engagement between the insurgents and the yeomen in 1798
rebellion.
Hacketstown has recently won the Tidy Towns award for the first
time. The village is a gateway to the Wicklow mountains to the east
and the beaches of Wexford to the south. |
