The picturesque
village of St. Mullins in South Carlow is a scenic and charming
River Barrow side village with an impressive ecclesiastical history.
Nestling between the Blackstairs Mountains on one side and Brandon
Hill on the other, the locality acquired its name from St. Moling, a
7th Century cleric, prince, poet, artist and artisan who built a
monastery here with the help of " Gobbán Saor ", the legendary Irish
builder.
The Saint Mullins Heritage Centre was opened August, 1994 - Themes
in the centre include the life and work of St Moling, founder of a
monastic settlement here in the 7th century; boating on the Barrow,
and the local milling and craft industries. The museum is located in
the old Church of Ireland and near the site of the old monastic
settlements.
This historic village is at the centre of the golfing ‘Sunshine
Circuit’ in southeast Ireland. Un-crowded courses, at reasonable
rates, are here to be enjoyed by all golfers whatever your standard.
Some of the finest parkland golf courses in Ireland such as Borris,
New Ross, Enniscorthy, Mount Wolseley , Carlow, Gowran Golf Club at
The Gowran Race Course in Kilkenny and the world famous Mount Juliet
are a short distance away.
For fishing enthusiast, the stretch of the River Barrow running
through St. Mullins is inhabited by a wide variety of fish. Apart
from salmon and trout there is a wide variety of fish for the coarse
angler.
This is also a particularly appealing area for cycling. Quiet
country roads and sleepy villages with nice pubs are common around
this part of the country. There are also plenty of places for
walkers to enjoy themselves. |
