Arvagh or Arva, is a
town in County Cavan which lies on the shores of Garty Lough and is
overlooked by Bruse Hill. It is a picturesque town situated in the
heart of the drumlin belt. It lies on the border of Counties
Longford and Leitrim and is famous as the town where the three Irish
provinces of Ulster, Leinster and Connaught meet.
The Arvagh area was settled by Scottish planters in the early 17th
century. The Earls of Gosford developed the town in the early 19th
century, building the Market House in the town centre. William
Bleakley born in Arvagh in 1890 was a pioneer of aviation and was
the first pilot to perform the aerobatic feat of looping the loop
The Arvagh area is popular with anglers and the lakes such as
Hollybank, Gowna, Gulladoo and Rockfield offer excellent fishing all
year round. With up to fifty lakes and streams to fish in the
locality, Arvagh plays host to a number of national and
international fishing competitions.
There are several pubs in the town, many of which have live music at
the weekends. Arvagh Agricultural Show is a great day out for those
interested in prize farm animals and it is held at the end of July
each year. Nearby Bruce mountain is a small hill which is crowned
with three stone cairns, dating from the Neolithic period. |
