Ballyconnell is a
town in West Cavan, 11km west of Belturbet near the Fermanagh
border. The town sits at the foot of Slieve Russell mountain which
provides extensive views of the surrounding countryside. The town
also lies beside the Shannon-Erne Waterway. This waterway links the
Shannon and Erne Rivers therefore making Ballyconnell accessible by
cruiser as well as by road. This canal - formerly known as the
Woodford Canal - was initially opened in 1856, but was re-opened in
1994 for cruisers, boats and canoes to explore the waterway.
Ballyconnell is a lively town, with a number of pubs, restaurants
and nightclub. The nearby Slieve Russell hotel has an 18-hole
championship golf course, par 3 course, tennis courts, country club,
and several bars and restaurants. Ballyconnell is a well-known
coarse fishing centre.
ODD's Gamespark is located beside Brackley Lake, a local beauty spot
a few miles west of Ballyconnell and beside the borders of Leitrim
and Fermanagh. This outdoor activity centre is a dedicated 20 acre
venue for extreme outdoor action events. Otherwise known as Out
Doors & Dirty, ODD’s five events are a unique, adrenaline-pumping
combination. Hovercrafting, Rage off road buggies, Conflict!
Woodland Laser Combat, Powerturn twin drive Dragsters and Clay
Pigeon Laser Shooting.
The Ballyconnell area has many sites of archaeological interest,
including the promontory fort at Ballyhugh 3 miles east and
Killycluggin 4 miles south-west, where the decorated Killycluggin
Stone was found. |
