Belturbet is a lively
and bustling market town on the east bank of the River Erne in
County Cavan, located 19km from Cavan town. Belturbet connects Cavan
Town with Ballyconnell.
Belturbet was built by the Earl of Lanesborough in the 17th century.
It was an important trading centre, and it also had a garrison. Much
of the original fortifications are in good repair. The town retains
much of its original layout, with the main street leading to the
square or diamond with all of the town’s important buildings.
Belturbet Railway Station built in 1885 has been renovated as a
Railway Visitor Centre which tells the history of the Belturbet
Railway and houses an interesting collection of railway memorabilia.
An excellent example of a 12th century Anglo Norman Mote and Bailey
can be viewed on Turbet Island near the present-day bridge in
Belturbet
Belturbet is an ideal base for exploring the river Erne and the
Shannon-Erne Canal. Cruisers can be hired in Belturbet and the
town's marina facilitates cruisers of all sizes. The river and
numerous surrounding lakes make Belturbet a very popular destination
for anglers. Visitors to the town will enjoy the beautiful riverside
walks. Golfers can try the charming Belturbet 9 hole golf course
situated on the outskirts of the town
The Festival of the Erne is a very popular annual event taking place
from at the end of July/early August. With the famed Lady of the
Erne pageant, live music, talent competition, marching bands,
fireworks and the most popular fancy dress party in the county, the
festival is not to be missed!
