Cootehill is a busy
town situated close to the County Monaghan border. Cootehill is a
fine example of an 18th Century Ulster market town. It began as a
small village in the early 1700s and soon developed into an
important market town for brown linen. The town owes its origins to
the Coote family who acquired a large estate in this area in the
late 18th century
Located between the rivers Dromore and Annalee, Cootehill is
renowned as a first rate fishing destination and with 26 lakes
within a 10 miles of the town, anglers are not short of options.
Evidence of ancient settlements can be seen in the area around
Cootehill. A Megalithic tomb at nearby Cohaw is a well-preserved
example of a double chamber tomb, at least 4000 years old. Set among
the drumlins outside Cootehill, Maudabawn Cultural Centre offers
classes, short visits, summer schools and tours on Ireland's rich
culture and heritage.
Bellamont House, built in 1725, is one of the finest Palladian
houses in Ireland. Designed by Edward Lovett Pearce, who also
designed the Bank of Ireland building on College Green in Dublin,
Bellamont House is not open to the public, although part of the
grounds and paths are accessible.
The Moravian cemetery in the town is a reminder of a small religious
sect which flourished in Cootehill from the mid-eighteenth century
up until the 1920s.
Situated amidst the rolling Drumlin hills of Cavan in an area of
outstanding beauty, Cootehill offers the visitor a variety of
outdoor and indoor activities within easy reach of the town
including swimming, tennis, pitch and putt and golf as well as the
excellent fishing facilities in the surrounding lakes and rivers. |
