Dowra is a small
village in northwest County Cavan on the border with County Leitrim.
The villagr overlooks Lough Allen, one of the largest and most
beautiful lakes in Ireland. Dowra is the first village on the River
Shannon as it starts its long journey south to Limerick and the sea.
The Shannon Pot, the source of the river, is located just 9km from
Dowra.
Fishing and the local Lough Allen Adventure Centre make this area a
popular destination, both for fishermen and those interested in
outdoor activities such as swimming, canoeing and yachting. The
way-marked walking routes 'The Cavan Way' and 'The Leitrim Way' meet
in Dowra.
The ancient fortification known as the Black Pig's Dyke, which is
thought to have divided the country in two, is located in the Dowra
