Milltown is a small
village situated 7km from Belturbet on the road to Killeshandra.
Situated beside the village of Milltown are the remains of the
Abbey/Monastery, Church and Round Tower of Drumlane, which dates
back to the year 555. The Round Tower, the only one in the Diocese
of Kilmore now stands as a silent senital to the Viking invasion.
These remains are located between the tranquil lakes of Derrybrick
and Drumlane
The founder of Drumlane is believed to be Saint Colmcille. Drumlane
was the site of an annual pilgrimage in the later middle ages, and
the ruined church contains some late medieval carvings. A crannog
can be seen in the lake just behind the remains of the medieval
abbey. Crannogs were artificial islands built in lakes for
protection against attackers and wild animals. They were used and
reused between 1000 BC and 1600
