The historic village
of Bunratty in County Clare is on the main road between Limerick
City and Ennis. It is just 13kms from Limerick, 8kms from Shannon
Airport and 25km from Ennis.
The renowned 15th century Bunratty Castle and 19th century Bunratty
Folk Park have put this charming village firmly on the world
heritage map. Bunratty Castle is the pride of more than 100 castles
built by the McNamara chieftains in 15th century Clare. The castle
commands a ford and anchorage on the Bunratty River. Restored to its
former glory, it offers daytime tours to tell of its history and
night-time mediaeval banquets to show how things were in days of
yore.
Beside the castle is the Bunratty Folk Park, a marvellous theme park
of reconstructed dwellings and places of business, illustrating 19th
century Irish life from grand manor house to peasant dwelling and
from farm activities to cobble-stone village street. Traditional
Irish Music Nights operate nightly in the great barn in Bunratty
Folk Park.
The village offers excellent shopping including including Meadows &
Byrnes, The Blarney Woollen Mills and The Bunratty Folk Park
Speciality Stores. Bunratty also boasts some excellent restaurants
including Gallaghers Seafood Restaurant, the loft at Durty Nellys,
the Bunratty Manor, The Creamery, Kathleens Irish Pub and JP
Clarke's.
Within a days trip of Bunratty village you can visit the famous
Cliffs of Moher, The Burren, Galway City and the beautiful lakes of
Killarney. Co. Clare also boasts some of the worlds renowned Golf
Courses namely Doonbeg, Lahinch and Dromoland golf courses. |
