Corofin is a quaint
village on the southern edge of the famous Burren region - one of
Europe's most distinctive landscapes. The village is situated on the
River Fergus 10km from Ennis.The village takes its name from an
ancient fording place on the river. The hinterland around Corofin is
known as Clare Lakelands and Lake Inchiquin beside the village is
often referred to as the "Killarney of Clare". Lough Atedaun is
another well known fishing lough in the locality. The area also
features many turloughs, small lakes which dry up in summer.
O'Brien castles abound in this part of County Clare. On the
well-wooded Lough Inchiquin, to the north-west, are the ruins of
mid-15th century Inchiquin Castle. North-east of the village stand
the remains of Ballyporty Castle, a stone fort. Leamanegh Castle is
a castle/fortified house 8km north-west of the village
Corofin is home of the Clare Heritage Museum and Genealogical
Centre. Corofin is also famous for traditional music and dance
hosting a festival each year. There are many fine pubs and
restaurants which have nightly entertainment all year round. The
traditional streets house a good selection of shops.
Corofin is the ideal location and base to explore West Clare and
beyond taking in the many amenities and attractions in this
beautiful part of Ireland. Within a short drive you can experience
the breathtaking views of the Cliffs of Moher, visit Lahinch, Doolin,
Lisdoonvarna, the Aran Islands, Aliwee Caves, Bunratty Castle and
Folk Park to name but a few.
Also known as "The Gateway to the Burren" or "The Angler's
Paradise", Corofin is the birthplace of renowned Irish painter
