Ennis is the
principal town of County Clare in Ireland. The river Fergus on which
the town is built was a busy route for cargo going on to the port at
Clarecastle, making Ennis an important market town. A market is
still held in the town on Saturday mornings. The meandering River
Fergus is also a well-known trout and salmon fishery. A recent
riverside development in Ennis featuring some superb pieces of
sculpture makes for a pleasant walk.
The history of Ennis, combined with its famous narrow streetscapes
and historic buildings gives it an ambience that confirms to
visitors, this is somewhere special. The oldest building is the 13th
century friary, roofless for generations, but containing some fine
examples of medieval sculpture. The newest building is Glór – Irish
Music Centre, a superb auditorium where the best of traditional
music and dance is performed on most nights, as well as theatre.
Ennis is regarded as the heartland of Irish music; look out for
superb nightly sessions, as well as some very lively annual
festivals.
Dozens of unusual shops, restaurants, pubs and cafés of all kinds
are dotted around the famous narrow streets. The town is fast
gaining a reputation as being 'the boutique capital of Ireland'.
The Riches of Clare Museum has artefacts, original works of art,
audio-visual and interactive experiences to illustrate life in the
county over a period of 6,000 years. Ennis Walking Tours offers
lively and entertaining guided walks through the winding medieval
streets of the town
Ennis Golf Club is situated just 1km North West of Ennis, off the
N18. The tree-lined parkland course, measuring 6,118 yards is kept
in immaculate condition. It is an 18 hole, par 71 course.
Ennis is an ideal centre for touring around County Clare and is
conveniently located close to Shannon Airport. Whether you’d like to
banquet at the 15th century Bunratty Castle, visit the cities of
Limerick or Galway or explore the wonderful Cliffs of Moher and
Atlantic coastline, everything is a short drive from Ennis.
