Miltown Malbay is a
small village located in the west of county Clare just slightly
inland from Spanish Point.
Miltown Malbay as its name suggests was a hub to which local farmers
brought there grain to be milled. The town once had five corn mills,
of which the ruins of three can still be seen. Nowadays Miltown
Malbay is famous for its week-long summer school inaugurated in
honour of the renowned uilleann piper Willie Clancy. The classes are
open to all-comers on a variety of instruments. It’s a fantastic
week of music, song, sessions, lectures, classes and just generally
good craic. This has helped to make Milltown Malbay - along with
Doolin further north - one of Irish music's cultural homelands
Slieve Callan, which rises to 423m to the east of Miltown, has a
fine megalithic tomb on its south-eastern slopes; the covering stone
is roughly 4m by 1m. To the north of the tomb is a flagstone with a
pseudo Ogham inscription. At Knocknalassa, to the right of the road
as you head for Ennis, lies Leaba Dhiarmada agus Grianne, or Diamuid
and Grainne's Bed.
Excellent bathing can be had at the silver strand of Freagh, a
little to the north of Milltown Malbay and at Spanish Point to the
west. |
