Mountshannon is a
very scenic village located on the western shore of Lough Derg,
north of Killaloe in east County Clare.
Mountshannon is a lovely place to visit. The atmosphere in the
village is warm and welcoming. The village itself is elevated on a
hill overlooking a beautiful harbour with panoramic views over Lough
Derg.
The village has strong links with history and includes some
excellent archaeology in the locality. Ring forts, Famine Graves,
Holy wells, and even a wedge tomb (known locally as 'The Dolmen')
can be found nearby, but the most impressive historical site has to
be Iniscealtra or Holy Island, a monastic settlement of great
significance in ancient Ireland. The island is just a short boat
trip from the village and comprises of various churches, graveyards,
a holy well and a selection of religious stone carvings.
Mountshannon is a favourite haunt of anglers for the mayfly season
on Lough Derg. A chain of islands lies along this part of the shore,
and there is a large area of shallow water suitable for trout (the
record Irish brown trout, 30 1/2 lb, was caught he
Mountshannon has become a popular boating centre on the Shannon
waterway following the reconstruction of the harbour. It is now one
of the principal stopping places on Lough Derg for hire cruisers and
other boats. Boats to Iniscealtra, the 'Holy Island', are available
at the harbour.
A recent addition to Mountshannon is the maze built in the centre of
the village in a very well maintained small park, with lovely views
of Lough Derg. The maze features information about the development
of traditional art in Ireland. Beside the maze is a picnic area made
out of wood carved by local artists.
