Quilty is a quaint
fishing village on the western seaboard located between Doonbeg and
Miltown Malbay in County Clare. Quilty is set in picturesque
surroundings with the Aran Islands and Atlantic Ocean on one side,
the Cliffs of Moher on another side with the Kerry mountains visible
in the distance. The village has a safe sandy beach
The village has long been associated with fishing with the
traditional currachs much in evidence in the locality. Lobster,
salmon, bass, herring and mackerel are landed at Quilty, formerly
known for its curing industry. Pollock, bass and mackerel are fished
from the shore.
Across the bay from Quilty is Mutton Island. St Senan founded a
church here in the early 6th century but by 1887 little remained
except the Bed of St. Senan, a shattered cross and a gable of his
oratory. Tromoroe Castle lies about 3 km from the village.
Today there is no sign of its former woods (in Gaelic Quilty is 'coillte',
meaning forest') |
