Quin is an historic
village about 15 km from Ennis in southeast County Clare.
The village's main attraction, Quin Abbey, is open to the public,
and although mostly ruined, much of the structure remains. Quin
Abbey was a Franciscan friary founded in 1402 by Sioda MacNamara.
The abbey was built on the foundations of an earlier Norman castle,
and the foundations of its corner towers can still be seen.
Quin village is home to a heritage site, Craggaunowen. This site
tells how the Celts arrived and lived in Ireland. It includes
replicas of dwellings, crannogs and ring forts, and the ancient
castle is also an attraction. A major feature is the Brendan Boat
built by Tim Severin who sailed from Ireland to Greenland,
re-enacting the voyage of St. Brendan, reputed to have discovered
America centuries before Columbus.
Quin is rapidly developing into a tourist hub. It is very popular
with fishermen who wish to fish all year round on the River Rine
(often erroneously spelt 'Rhine'). Quin also has developed a popular
equestrian industry with several stud farms around the village.
There is also a rich array of historical gems that attracts many
visitors.
In recent years Knappogue Castle in Quin has underwent restoration
and is opened for viewing between April and October. You can sample
medieval banquets in the main part of the castle between May and
October.
