Scarriff is a
beautiful market town just north of Killaloe in East Clare. The town
is on the West end of Lough Derg which is one of the prettiest parts
of the Lough. Scarriff village is accessible from Lough Derg through
the Graney River, which is navigable for pleasure boats and cruisers
up to the basin or harbour . Cahir Island dominates the bay along
with the ruins of Ballykelly Castle on the neighbouring island.
Scariff is built on a hill. The town square is located on the top of
the hill making every road on the town go uphill. The Scariff River
and Ducey's Pier is very attractive for anglers while river cruises
are a very popular choice for visitors as well.
Scarriff was chosen as the location for the regional headquarters of
Waterways Ireland, a body which manages, maintains and develops
Ireland's inland navigable waterways, principally for recreational
purposes. The redevelopment of Scarriff Harbour by Waterways Ireland
is helping to establish Scarriff as an important centre on Ireland's
waterways.
There are many walkways and rest areas along the river side in
Scariff. Visitors can investigate about the history through the
heritage centre which is located next to the 10th century church in
Tuamagraney. A new state of the art playground is now located on the
Feakle Road leaving Scarriff Village. This is a great way to
entertain active children for free.
There are a number of festivals and shows in Scarriff every year,
including the Scariff Show , the Scariff Harbour Festival and the
Clare Drama Festival. |
