Ballycotton is a
beautiful seaside village in County Cork, situated about 40km east
of Cork city. It is a famous fishing village popular with deep sea
anglers. The village is set on a rocky-ledge overlooking Ballycotton
Bay. From the village there are wonderful views over a boat filled
harbour to a steep island crowned by a 19th Century lighthouse.
Visitors to Ballycottone will enjoy the views from the cliff walks
and also the rich birdlife in the extensive marshy bird sanctuary
located inland from the village.Ballycotton is also well known for
it's award winning restaurants, traditional Irish pubs and it's
welcoming atmosphere.
Ballycotton has a proud maritime history. In 1837 the famous steam
ship “ Sirius ” was lost off the coast near Ballycotton - Sirius had
been the first passenger steam ship to cross the Atlantic. Today the
RNLI Lifeboat stationed at Ballycotton is one of the most modern
afloat. This service has a very commendable history with many famous
rescues over the years.
Deep Sea angling in Ireland first took place from Ballycotton. From
a non-tidal harbour good angling mareas can be reached in 20-40
minutes. The approved charter boats operating out of Ballycotton
specialise in shark, bottom and wreck angling. The main species
available include blue shark, cod,ling, ray, pollock, black sole,
plaice, mackerel,conger and common skate. Unsurprisingly Ballycotton
holds many Irish specimen fishing records
Just over 3km to the east of Ballycotton is Garryvoe with its
beautiful unspoilt sandy beache that stretches for miles towards
Knockadoon Head. Attractions nearby include The Old Midleton
Distillery where guided tours are available. Golfers are spoilt for
choice as there are 10 courses within a 10 mile radius of
Ballycotton. The local area is also home to many artists and
craftspeople included woodworkers, painters, potters, writers and
musicians who regularly exhibit at the Stephen Pearce Gallery in
nearby Shanagarry.
Every year an arts festival is held in the village with a variety of
fun filled workshops and family events. The annual Ballycotton Road
Race attracts runners from around Ireland and abroad to its 10 Mile
circuit of country back roads. |
