Ballydehob is a a
charming and colourful hillside village situated along the South
West coast of Ireland between the market town of Skibbereen and the
harbour village of Schull. It is located about 30 kilometres east of
Mizen Head, Ireland's south-western tip.
The village is a patchwork of brightly painted gables, with antique
shops, craft galleries, a bookshop, and many good places to eat and
drink. Ballydehob also has the reputation of nurturing the arts, and
is home to several writers, artists, sculptors, and craftspeople.
Each year the village holds both a jazz festival and a traditional
music, song and dance festival.
A graceful 12 arch bridge crosses the estuary at Ballydehob.
Originally this bridge carried the West Cork Railway. This bridge is
now disused, but provides panoramic views of Roaringwater Bay from
the walkway. At the west end of the village there is a monument of
the late Danno Mahony known as The Irish Whip he won the NWA World
wrestling title from Jim Londos in Boston on June 30th 1935.
The area around Ballydehob is rich in natural beauty, with stunning
views of the Islands of Roaring Water Bay and the Fastnet Rock to be
seen in the locality.
