Carrigaline is a town
on the Owenabue river in County Cork, Ireland. The town is 12km from
Cork City and 5km from both Cork Airport and Ringaskiddy Ferryport -
the latter links Cork with Swansea and Roscoff. Renowned for its
pottery, Carrigaline is one of three main satellite towns built
around Cork City and is the largest in the Owenabue Valley. It is an
ideal base for exploring Counties Cork and Kerry.
The original town of Carrigaline was built around Carrigaline Castle
built on a high limestone, bluff 1.5 km east of the present town
centre. Carrigaline Castle, one of the oldest castles in Ireland,
was built around 1180 by the Norman family of de Cogan. The ruins of
the castle are still evident today.
Currabinny Forest Trail is just a short distance east of Carrigaline
and represents one of many scenic walks in Carrigaline and its
environs. The forest consists largely of deciduous woods and are
spectacular in autumn but make a pleasant walk at any time of
year.The forest trails here are unusual in that they were originally
laid out for horse and carriage so that they are wide and airy
Fernhill Golf and Country Club is ideally situated on the outskirts
of Carrigaline, and located just 20mins from Cork City and Kinsale.
Stretched over an area of 6,053 yards, it's a scenic 18 hole
parkland course.
Within a 10 minute drive of Carrigaline there is sailing in
Crosshaven, golf at Monkstown Golf Club and the sandy beaches of
Myrtleville, Roberts Cove and Rocky Bay. Within a 15 minute drive
there is 5 superb Golf courses including the magnificent Fota Island
Golf Club, home to the Murphy's Irish Open in 2002 and Cork Golf
Club. The historic and scenic town of Kinsale with its many fine
gourmet restaurants is only 20 minutes drive from Carrigaline. |
