Clonakilty is a small
but thriving market town in West Cork, about 45 minutes drive from
Cork City. The town is also situated 10 minutes from some of
Irelands most beautiful blue flag beaches, in particular the
wonderful Inchydoney. Clonakilty is a link to a lot of the other
main west Cork towns including Bandon, Skibbereen and Dunmanway.
Clonakilty is a town of tall spires, elegant squares and buildings
rich in historical significance. The town was founded by Richard
Boyle, Great Earl of Cork in 1588. Today the centre of the town is
particularly attractive, with the traditional store fronts and
restaurants painted in bright colours and many flowers and plants
blooming along the narrow bustling streets. Old style pavements add
to the historical effect.
Clonakilty is a favourite amongst tourists both Irish and
international. A vibrant nightlife encompasses a traditional music
focus as well as contemporary entertainment. De Barras bar in the
middle of town is renowned as a venue for traditional and folk music
as well as hosting the best in contemporary music.
A short walk from the town centre is a Model Village Exhibition
which is a reconstruction of Clonakilty in the 1940s.Clonakilty also
houses the West Cork Regional Museum which pays tribute to
Clonakilty's industrial past - especially its linen industry.
Clonakilty is an ideal tourism location and nearby are a number of
wonderful beaches such as the magnificent Inchydoney beach now home
to a thriving surfing culture as well as being a wonderful location
for swimming and walking. A number of festivals take place in
Clonakilty every year including The West Cork Rally, an
International Guitar Festival and the Michael Collins Festival.
Music, good food and a bit of craic can be had in the many
hostelries in this delightful town.

was born at Woodfield near Clonakilty. |
