Fermoy is a
magnificent market town situated in the centre of the lush
Blackwater Valley 35 km north-east of Cork city. It is strategically
located where the main roads from Dublin to Cork and Dungarvan to
Killarney intersect and it is also a major railway junction. By
passed in recent years by a motorway the town now glories in its
merchant buildings dating from the 1790’s
The Irish name of the town, refers to a Cistercian abbey founded in
the 12th century and a ford on the Blackwater, around which the town
grew up. Fermoy was later developed as a garrison town at the end of
the 18th century by the Scottish-born John Anderson. Close by is
Hyde Castle, the ancestral home of Douglas Hyde the first president
of Ireland. The bridge over the Blackwater river was built in 1865.

fishing with the Blackwater and Funshion rivers being the main
waters.

in 1892. Situated on the sunny south facing slopes of Corrin Hill
