Glengarriff is one of
Ireland’s most beautifully situated villages. Nestling at the foot
of the Caha Mountains the village sits at the northern head of
Glengarriff Bay, a smaller enclave of Bantry Bay. Located 20km west
of Bantry, and 30km east of Castletownbere, it is a popular stop
along the tourist routes around the area.
The mild Gulf Stream climate has ensured that Glengariff area has
long been a fascinating area for travellers with its unique flora
being its main appeal. This appeal is clearly evident in a number of
the attractions that the village has to offer. Garnish Island in the
harbour with its selection of ornamental gardens is one of the
premier tourist destinations in the South West and the ferry to the
island takes in the largest colony of endearing Harbour Seals on the
Irish coastline.
Glengarriff Bamboo Park is a new attraction which showcases a
worldwide collection of bamboo, palms and ferns all in a spectacular
shore front setting. The Ewe Sculpture Garden and Gallery is
Ireland’s only interactive sculpture garden. It consists of a series
of luxuriant hillside gardens with wonderful sculptures in a magical
wooded setting with waterfalls. The Ewe is very popular with
families and all ages are enchanted by its inventive and imaginative
array of exhibits.
Glengarriff Nature Reserve has one of the largest oak forests still
intact in Ireland and is home to a great array of flora and
wildlife. This ancient oak forest features a meandering river,
rustic old bridges, hills and valleys and has a network of walks and
picnic areas. The walks and trails within the reserve are ideal for
all ages and each season brings its own delight and appeal. Two
particularly attractive aspects within the reserve are the Waterfall
Walk and Lady Bantry’s Lookout. A short but steep trail leads up to
Lady Bantry's Lookout - the climb will be richly rewarded with a
stunning vista of Glengarriff and the west Cork area.
Glengarriff is a well recognised walking destination with walks for
all abilities and ambitions. Sli na Sláinte is a marked walk of
approx 6km with route markers every 1km ideal for an easy stroll.
The Beara Way is a long distance walking route running through
Castletownbere, Adrigole Glengarriff and continuing through the Caha
Hills. The route is easily accessed locally and sections can be
walked conveniently.
Glengariff Golf Club is truly a club with a view! Glengarriff's nine
holes are in one of the loveliest settings in Ireland, with scenic
views abounding. The seaside courses of Bantry, Kenmare and
Castletownbere are less than a half hour drive away from the
village. |
