Macroom is a
picturesque market town full of brightly painted buildings and with
a wealth of historical interest. The town is located in a valley on
the River Sullane, a tributary of the River Lee. The town commands
an unrivalled geographic position within County Cork, almost midway
between Cork City (40Km) and Killarney Town (48Km) on the N22. It is
situated on the northern side of the Carrigadrohid Reservoir
The ruins of Macroom Castle can be seen from the town, although
little remains of the original building. On the western side of the
town square, the Castle Demesne is a magnificent natural stone built
gateway to the castle grounds, a haven of secluded walks offering
views across Macroom and the Sullane Valley. Other places of
interest nearby include the local museum, the Town Hall and the
Macroom Workhouse. For theatre and cinema lovers, there is the
Briery Gap Cultural Centre.Slightly further afield, the Gearagh Wild
Life Nature Reserve is home to an abundance of flora and fauna.
There is much evidence of Macroom's pre-Christian habitation in the
many standing stones, dolmens, stone circles and fulacht fiadh in
the surrounding land. A few kilometres to the north of Macroom is
Mushera Mountain, with the family attraction of Millstreet Country
Park, a 1.5 km walk to the summit of the mountain, and the ancient
Saint John's Well. 5km west of Macroom, to the left of the main
road, in a very picturesque setting, is Carrigaphooca Castle. The
‘pooka’ is a malicious spirit who haunted this fairytale place.
The area around Macroom is renowned for its natural beauty and is
ideal for those who enjoy outdoor pursuits such as hill walking,
fishing and golf. The town is ideally placed within reach of a
variety of places of interest, such as Garnish Island in Glengariff,
Blarney Castle, the heritage town of Kenmare and, of course, the
bustling city of Cork itself.
Macroom Golf Club is a parkland course, situated on the banks of the
Sullane river, and within the grounds of Macroom Castle demesne.
With the majestic Kerry mountains creating a backdrop to the west,
golfers can enjoy the peaceful beauty that surrounds them on this
splendid course.
The Sullane River flows east through Ballyvourney and Macroom into
Carrigadrohid Reservoir. It is a moorland river and holds a good
stock of brown trout averaging 6 oz. It fishes well through the
season and the fly fishing is particularly good on summer evenings
in July and August. The fishing is regarded as free; Macroom and
District Fly Anglers have a conservation interest in the river.
