Mallow is a thriving
market town located on the banks of the River Blackwater. It is the
largest town along the lovely Blackwater Valley and is the
administrative capital of north County Cork. It is situated 35 km
north of Cork City and 64 km east of Killarney.
Up to a century ago Mallow was renowned as a spa town, with crowds
of visitors frequenting it - crowds whose behaviour gave rise to the
well-known song 'The Rakes of Mallow'. Nowadays Mallow is a thriving
business centre.
Mallow has two castles - the "old castle", which stands on the river
bank and is steeped in folklore and ghost stories, and the imposing,
"new castle" - a fine baronial building privately owned and superbly
maintained. Nearby is another much-loved landmark, the Mallow Clock
House. The Spa House was constructed in 1828 over the spring well -
the house eventually became the headquarter of the Rakes of Mallow.
Today it is home to the Energy Agency Office. Not far from Mallow,
Springfort Hall is an interesting house which traces its history
back to at least the early 17th century
Mallow is a significant coarse and game angling centre. Angling
takes place on the River Blackwater. Ballyhass Lakes just northwest
of the town consist of two superb lakes stocked with rainbow and
brown trout, ideal for fly fishing. The Blackwater river is actually
the second largest river in Ireland. It is a good place to go
canoeing as well as fishing.
Set in the heart of the Blackwater Valley, Mallow Golf Club is
situated just 2 km to the south east of Mallow Bridge on the
Killavullen Road. It is a tree-lined 18-hole parkland course and
measures 6,556 yards. Just 5 minutes from Mallow is the Ballinamona
Golf Club. Stretched over an area of 6,200 yards in length,
Ballinamona is an 18 hole, parkland course yet has a links-like
feel.
The town is also home to Cork Racecourse Mallow, situated on the
banks of the Blackwater, This racecourse is the spiritual home of
National Hunt racing. With 19 national hunt and flat meetings all
year round Cork Racecourse provides the facilities to enjoy the
excitement and spectacle of a day at the races. Horseback riding is
available locally at the Eden Hill Equestrian Centre or the Ivy
Bridge Equestrian Centre.
Mallow is also a good base for walking holidays. The Blackwater Way
covers 188 kilometres of scenic walking routes, and is currently
being earmarked as a National Waymarked Way and European E8 long
distance walking trail. It encompasses the Knockmealdown Mountains,
rich farms and woodlands of the Blackwater Valley as well as the
slopes of the Nagle Hills and Paps Mountains. Knockroura is a newly
developed amenity 2.5km south of Mallow comprising forest walks,
impressive scenery and picnic facilities.
Kilavullen Caves are located in the village of Kilavullen, 9.5km
east of Mallow. |
