Midleton is a busy
market town in south-eastern County Cork, 22 km from the Cork City
on the N25 between Cork and Rosslare. The town is located on the
banks of the Owenacurra River and is the economic hub of East Cork.
The origins of this historic town go back to 1180 AD when the
Cistercian monks founded a monastery on the banks of the Owenacurra.
Today Midleton is perhaps best known for its distillery. The Murphy
family opened their first whiskey distillery in the town in 1825.
The Irish Distillers group have restored the Old Midleton Distillery
and guided tours are available. The story of Irish whiskey is
presented through audiovisual displays, working models and authentic
machinery. Highlights of the tour include the world's largest pot
still, with a capacity of over 30,000 gallons.
Midleton is also home to the St John the Baptist Church whose
records date back to 1302. The Town Hall built in 1789 houses the
public library. Barryscourt Castle at nearby Carrigtwohill has been
restored to its former glory and has a small restaurant and craft
shop with regular art exhibitions.
In keeping with its merchant past Midleton offers visitors a wide
choice of hand-made lace and linen, fine porcelain dolls, designer
knitwear and interesting antiques. Drawing on the rich resources of
the surrounding countryside, Midleton is also renowned for its fine
food culture and lively pubs.A farmers market on every Saturday
attracts many artisan food producers.
Midleton is well-placed for visiting Cork city, and also exploring
the whole of east Cork, including Cobh, Fota Wildlife Park &
Arboretum and Youghal, famed for its connections with Sir Walter
Raleigh. Nearby the historic villages of Cloyne, Castlemartyr,
Killeagh and Shanagarry will woe visitors with their tales from the
past and 21st century crafts. Midleton is also ideally located as a
centre from where one can visit the many beaches in the area. Shore
and lake fishing are popular local pursuits and one of Ireland's
largest sea angling centres can be found in nearby Ballycotton.
Midleton is the ideal destination for a great holiday or a day trip
with a wide variety of activities and attractions for all. For the
out door enthusiast, championship golf, superb sea angling, sea
adventures and sea trips on a variety of craft, walks, tennis and
riding are all available in the locality.
