Millstreet is
situated in north Couty Cork midway between Killarney and Mallow.
The town nestles at the foot of Clara Mountain and is virtually
surrounded on all sides by hills. The meandering rivers Finnow and
Blackwater greatly enhance the beauty of this part of Cork
Millstreet and its surroundings is an area rich in archaeological
heritage. Millstreet itself is actually 300 years old and its
history is charted within the town's museum which was opened in
1980. Beside the town is historic Drishane with its 15th century
castle and impressive grounds.
In recent years, the town of Millstreet has become well known for a
number of reasons. It is the location of the renowned Green Glens
Equestrian Centre which hosts major international equestrian shows
featuring the top European riders. In 1993 the Eurovision Song
Contest was broadcast from here to over 300 million viewers
throughout Europe.The venue has also hosted a World Championship
boxing match as well as many concerts.
Another major attraction is the Millstreet Country Park, a 500 acre
environmental themed park, a must for all visitors to Millstreet. It
contains natural boglands and wetland habitats, a sensory garden,
archaeological sites and entertainment for younger members of the
family. The Millstreet Town Park features playing fields, children’s
play area, cinder track and pitch and putt course.
The river Blackwater, flowing just two miles from the town, is
famous throughout Europe for its salmon and trout fishing. Visitors
can obtain, for a reasonable fee, a permit from the local angling
club enabling them to fish the river.
Clara Mountain, rising at 1000ft above the town, (1400ft above sea
level) provides a spectacular panoramic view. On a clear day the
lakes of Killarney can be seen from the summit. Clara is just one of
many hills within easy reach of Millstreet which are ideal for
mountain walking. The route of the Blackwater Way which is a 7 day
walk passes within a mile of the town. |
