Mitchelstown is a
vibrant town located in North East County Cork. The town nestles in
the valley on the southern side of the Galtee Mountains and is
roughly 48km from Cork City and 36km from Limerick City. The Gradog
river runs by the town into the Funcheon river, which in turn is a
tributary of the nearby Blackwater river. Mitchelstown is located in
the heart of an area known as the “Golden Vale”, and is famous for
its cheese.
Mitchelstown has a unique 19th century townscape. There are two
attractive squares in the town, which were part of a formally laid
out plan for the town initiated by the Earls of Kingston between
1775 and 1820
The extensive local river network in the Mitchelstown area offers a
wide choice of game and coarse fishing. Riding tuition, trail tiding
and pony prekking are available at local equestrian centres.
Mitchelstown lies in the valley between the Galtee and the
Knockmealdown Mountains. Both mountain ranges offer beautiful
scenery and can provide the keen rambler with a huge variety of
walks. The drive along the Blackwater Valley and around by 'The Vee'
is one of the most scenic drives in the country and lies at the
town's doorstep. Ballyhoura Mountain Park and Doneraile Forest Park
both offer marked walks, nature trails and orienteering combined
with plenty of fresh air and splendid scenery.
Set in the lush Golden Vale, Mitchelstown Golf Club is an attractive
parkland course and is particularly well known for the quality of
its greens and fairways, and its friendly atmosphere. The view from
the course is magnificent with the majestic Galtee Mountains as the
natural backdrop
Mitchelstown Caves are located in County Tipperary 12km east of
Mitchelstown. These caves are one of the most treasured cave
complexes in Western Europe and extend over an area about 16 kms
long and 5 kms wide. They are open year-round for guided tours
Mitchelstown is also the ideal location for touring around the South
of Ireland. Within 90 minutes you can be in Waterford, Kilkenny,
Cork, West Cork and Killarney and the ring of Kerry |
