Rosscarbery is an
attractive and historic village situated on an elevated position
west of Inchydoney on a shallow estuary, which opens onto
Rosscarbery Bay. The village lies approximately half way between the
towns of Clonakilty and Skibbereen on the rugged West Cork
coastline.
Rosscarbery has a long and interesting history. The town grew up
around a monastery, which was founded in the 6th century by St.
Fachtna. A Protestant Cathedral, founded in 1612, houses many relics
of the past in a quaint little museum. The famous Irish patriot
O'Donovan Rossa (1831 - 1915) had strong connections with the area.
Nearby at Froe and Benduff are the remains of what were once West
Cork's largest slate quarries which employed many people in the 19th
century.
The town is based around a quiet central square containing nicely
decorated buildings with traditional shop fronts. Nearby is a small
harbour and the Blue Flag Beaches of the Warren and Owenahincha. At
the Marine Leisure Centre, pedal boats, rowing dinghies or canoes
are available for hire in the safest of surroundings and sailing
lessons are available. For the angler, Rosscarbery offers estuary,
rock, deep sea and fresh water fishing - with bait in plentiful
supply. The Lagoon and estuary are great favourites with bird
watchers as large numbers of duck, waders, sea and migratory birds
are to be seen.
There are numerous megalithic tombs and stone circles to be found
around Rosscarbery, the most famous of these being the Stone Circle
at Drombeg situated about a mile from the town. This dates back to
the Bronze Age, approx. 100 BC and is particularly impressive with
17 stones standing in a circle. About three miles from Rosscarbery,
in the centre of Castlefreke Woods, are the magnificent ruins of the
15th century castle.
Rosscarbery is home to a number of festivals and events during the
year including the Rosscarbery Oyster Festival and the Rosscarbery
Arts & Literature Festival. |
