Union Hall is a small
fishing village located in a sheltered corner at the upper end of
Glandore Harbour, amidst the spectacular scenery of the West Cork
coastline. Its nearest neighbour to the west is Castletownshend; to
the east, Glandore. It is approximately 10km east of Skibbereen.
This small port has always had a strong seafaring tradition and now
provides a safe harbour for its own fishing fleet as well as
anchorage to pleasure boats, and calm water for skiing, diving and
canoeing. The new causeway leading into the village creates a
natural lagoon and the sweep of homes and shops surrounding it
create a vision of brightly coloured ribbons on the water's surface.
Union Hall is surrounded by extensive woodland and is connected by a
bridge with Glandore Harbour. Among its many tourist attractions are
boat trips to view whales, dolphins and seals. Seals can be seen all
year round, with dolphins and Fin Whales, Minke Whales and Humpback
Whales present in summer months. The waters off Union Hall and
Glandore are clean and unspoilt and ideal for sea angling. The area
is well sheltered from the prevailing westerly winds, thereby
ensuring a mild climate and abundant fish life.
The Ceim Hill Museum is located in the village. Ceim Hill is a 500
year old farm house with an open hearth. The private collection
housed here has artefacts from Neolithic times, Old and New Stone
Age, Bronze and Iron Ages. The visitor can see prehistoric animal
jaws, bone tools and old farm tools as well as lace, linen and West
Cork cloaks. For history enthusiasts there is a "War of
Independence" room.
Union Hall Festival is held yearly in June, featuring games and
water sports of all kinds, from serious racing to outrageous
tom-foolery.
Union Hall was the location for David Puttnam's film "War of the
Buttons".
