Bellaghy village is
situated north west of Lough Neagh and about 5 miles north of
Magherafelt. The Village was one of the first planned towns in
Ireland. Built under the authority of the Vintners Company of London
in the 17th century the village originally consisted of a church, a
castle, a corn mill and 12 houses.At the centre of the village today
lies the junction of three main roads leading to Magherafelt,
Portglenone and Toome.
Nobel Prize for Literature winner Seamus Heaney grew up in Bellaghy.
Bellaghy and the surrounding countryside have played a profound role
on Heaney’s life, strongly influencing much of his work
Bellaghy Bawn is a 17th century fortified house and bawn (the
defensive wall surrounding an Irish tower house). It was built by
Sir Baptist Jones around 1619 when he rented the land from the
Vintners Company of London. Bellaghy Bawn was opened to the public
in 1996. It contains a guide to archaeology, history and nature
around Bellaghy. It also features Seamus Heaney's poetry films and
broadcasts. |
