Castledawson village
lies four miles from the north-western shores of Lough Neagh, close
to the market town of Magherafelt and at the foot of the Sperrins.
Originally, the village was known as "Dawson's Bridge" and had the
distinction of having (at one time) the largest single span stone
bridge in Ireland. The village was named after its 'castle'
(actually a large manor house) built by Joshua Dawson in 1713.
The River Moyola, which dissects the village, is popular with
anglers and has managed stocks of salmon (but also has perch, eel,
trout and bream} Dominating the horizon to the west of the village
is a dramatic ráth. For those that love the outdoors there is also
the ancient Shillgray wood nearby where ancient relics from the
Celts have been found.
One mile north of the village is Castledawson Open Farm which
features rare fowl breeds, goats, rabbits, Jacob and Soya sheep.
Dexter cattle, guinea pigs, miniature Shetland ponies and emus.
Located just outdise Castledawson is Moyola Park Golf Club. Founded
in 1977 by Lord and Lady Moyola and opened by Seve Ballesteros,
Moyola Park Golf Club is set in the beautiful wooded parkland of
Shanemullagh, a Georgian House occupying 130 acres. |
