Claudy village lies 6
miles southeast of Derry, where Fore Glen and Glenrandal join the
Faughan Valley. Claudy is situated on the banks of the the Faughan
river, which rises in the Sperrin mountains and flows into the River
Foyle just before it enters Lough Foyle
One of the main features in the locality is the Ness Wood Country
Park , a delightful place with a wide variety of plant and wildlife.
The Park comprises 50 hectares of mixed woodland known as Ness,
Ervey and Tamnymore, in the sheltered Burntollet Valley. The main
feature of the Park is a spectacular waterfall (the highest in
Northern Ireland), from which the Park derives its name.
Also in the Claudy area are the ruins of the Older Cumber Parish
Church founded by St. Patrick and visited by Column Cille in 575.
Other places of interest nearby include 17th Century Brackfield Bawn
designed by Sir Edward Doddington, who also designed the Walls of
Derry. Also in he vicinity is the ancient prehistoric site of
Ballygroll with monuments extending from the Neolithic period to the
Bronze Age.
Today Claudy is a lively and growing place with a warm community
spirit.
