City Derry City -
often called the Maiden City - is the second largest city in
Northern Ireland. The old walled city of Londonderry lies on the
west bank of the River Foyle the The present day city now covers
both banks (Cityside to the west and Waterside to the east) and the
river is spanned by two bridges.
Derry is the only remaining completely intact walled city in Ireland
and one of the finest examples of a walled city in Europe. The Walls
were built during the period 1613-1618 by "the honourable the Irish
Society" as defences for early 17th century settlers from England
and Scotland. The Walls, which are approximately 1 mile in
circumference and which vary in height and width between 12 and 35
feet , are completely intact and form a walkway around the inner
city. They provide a unique promenade to view the layout of the
original town which still preserves its Renaissance style street
plan.
The four original gates to the Walled City are Bishop’s Gate,
Ferryquay Gate, Butcher Gate and Shipquay Gate to which three
further gates were added later, Magazine Gate, Castle Gate and New
Gate, making seven gates in total. Historic buildings within the
walls include the 1633 Gothic cathedral of St Columb, the Apprentice
Boys Memorial Hall and the courthouse.
The award winning Tower Museum is located inside the city walls just
opposite the Guildhall. It tells the story of Derry from the very
beginning right up to the present day. You can take the tour on your
own or go round with one of their friendly guides who will help
bring this compelling story to life. There are interactive exhibits
for the whole family plus a great viewpoint on the roof of the tower
too – the Tower Museum is a must on any visit to Derry! The Harbour
Museum, housed in the former Londonderry Port & Harbour
Commissioners offices depicts the city’s maritime heritage and as a
port for emigration to North America.

For lovers of the arts there are a host of art galleries, theatres
and cinemas in the city. With Derry’s strong musical tradition its
no surprise that the city is home to many festivals throughout the
year including the Foyle Film Festival and the Jazz Festival. The
biggest festival of all is the Halloween Carnival. This festival has
to be one of the biggest outside of North America with the city
besieged by witches, warlocks, ghost and ghouls and an amazing
fireworks display on the river.
Shopping in Derry’s small yet perfectly formed historic city centre
is a pleasant experience with great value prices and everything
within easy walking distance. Among the many retail outlets are the
Foyleside Shopping Centre and the Richmond Shopping Centre, with
over 80 big name stores between them. In addition there is a unique
Craft Village reminiscent of Ireland in years gone by in the heart
of the city, regular markets in Guildhall Square, plus numerous
independent and designer boutiques dotted around the city. See
