The village of
Magilligan lies near Magilligan Point, which forms one side of the
mouth of Lough Foyle. At this point Greencastle in Donegal is only
one mile away. A Ferry service operates between the two coastal
villages
Magilligan’s isolation gave the area strategic importance in times
past. Lough Foyle represents the only waterborne approach to Derry
City and was thus a key area for defence. In 1812 the British
erected a Martello Tower at Magilligan, and another in Greencastle,
to protect against the possibility of Napoleon using Ireland in any
attack on England. Thanks to the Martello tower’s 12-foot thick
cannon proof walls, it still stands today mounting two 24-pounder
guns.
The prehistoric site at St. Aidan’s has an illustrious history that
has spanned from the Druids to St. Patrick. The Graveyard includes
the tomb of St. Aidan himself. |
