Moneymore,lying in
the South of County Derry half way between Lough Neagh and the
Sperrins mountains, is perhaps the best preserved example of the
Plantation towns which predominate the Mid-Ulster area. The
Ballymully River flows through the southern part of the village. The
river rises on Slieve Gallion, which has a notable radio tower on
its summit, and can be seen clearly from most of the district.
Moneymore was originally built by the Drapers company, who held the
town in such esteem that they invested in a large scale
reconstruction as recently as 1817. Moneymore features the wide
streets and large, precisely ordered buildings which characterise
Plantation architecture.
On the outskirts of the town is Springhill House. A Plantation house
dating from the 17th Century, Springhill was owned by the Lenox-Conyngham
family until 1957 - when they gave the estate to the National
Trust.Springhill has a beguiling spirit that captures the heart of
every visitor. Described as ‘one of the prettiest houses in Ulster’,
its welcoming charm reveals a family home with portraits, furniture
and decorative arts that bring to life the many generations of
Lenox-Conynghams who lived here from 1680. The old laundry houses
one of Springhill’s most popular attractions, the Costume Collection
with some exceptionally fine 18th to 20th century pieces.
Moneymore Park is an attractive park with walks, wildlife pond and
an environmental play area. |
